Ever wonder what goes on at photoshoots? Or need to know how to make your photoshoots more successful? At last, the truth can be revealed! Let me pull back the curtain and show you how the magic happens. Just follow these seven insider secrets to get the most out of your next photoshoot.
1. PLAN AHEAD, IMPROVISE AS NEEDED
It’s important to go into any photoshoot with a concrete plan of what you want to shoot and how you want to shoot it. It’s also important to be flexible and prepared to improvise to capture that one perfect shot.
2. SPECIAL EFFECTS
A fog machine can add ambiance and an atmospheric haze. But be careful. A little smoke goes a long way. Never let the effect overwhelm the merchandise.
3. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Let’s face it, studios offer a lot of flexibility, but when it comes down to it, you just can’t beat a day at the beach.
4. GOOD MORNING, GOOD EVENING
There’s a reason photographers want to capture that first morning light and the last glow of dusk. The results are phenomenal. So be prepared to get up early and/or stay out late.
5. BE PREPARED
Always plan for any contingency. Whether you’re shooting at a location that doesn’t want the carpet sullied, or shooting somewhere that doesn’t have restroom facilities, you have to be ready to take care of business … so to speak.
6. EMBRACE DOWNTIME
Between shots, between set changes, between lighting setups, downtime is unavoidable. Use the time wisely to plan your next few shots, organize merchandise or props, or even take a quick break.
7. BUILD YOUR CREW
You want your entire crew – photographer, techs, stylists, assistants, producers – to work like a well-oiled machine. Build a team that specializes in shooting what you sell (apparel, food, furniture, etc.). And just as important, assemble people that are willing to lend a hand (or a foot) to do whatever it takes to make each shot great.
THAT’S A WRAP!
